You are now ready to add your products to your Shopify store. This is, without a doubt, one of the most important processes to create your online business! However, before adding them to the platform and publishing them, you should make sure to create a clear descriptive structure so that your store is more attractive and your products sell better. For each product you need the following elements:

  • Product title and description
  • Product photos
  • Prices
  • Product variations
  • Size and weight
  • Inventory

Why are these items necessary? 

Because this information will make it easier to add your products to the platform, which I will explain in the next section, and it is also an essential part of the process that guarantees that your store is consistent and attractive to your customers. 

What do you need before publishing your products?

Title and description

They are two of the most important elements because they move the customer to seek more information about the product and, by clicking on the link, possibly execute the purchase.

The title should be descriptive and, depending on the theme chosen for your store (more on this in the next section of this guide), the platform allows you both a short and a longer description. 

Generally, a basic description works very well, but it should always give some detail of the product.

When writing the description:

Avoid block texts. Because people tend to look at details from a bird’s eye view, I always recommend turning the description into bullets, as it is much more effective and specific.

Show benefits over features.  Describing the products is not the same as explaining how you solve the customer’s problem or what experience they will have with that product. That is the way in which people identify the products they want to buy. It is not the same to say that with x smartphones you can take photos than to say that with that phone if you are going to have all the photos of your family in one place. It’s all about the experience!

Create a story. It’s a different way of talking to people and when they start reading that story, it’s easier for them to identify that this is the product they are looking for.

Product photography

You can include one or more photographs and variations of these. For example, if you sell shirts and you have them in different colors and sizes, you can include these photos on the platform so that people see the selection change when changing the image. The photo size limit is 20 megabytes per photo. 

Price

You need to set the price of your product and, within this element, you have three possibilities: the regular price of the product, the special price and the cost of the product. 

Including all three options will allow you to access the analytics and see the real profit from your sales, which is much more effective.

Variations

Here are included the different variants of your products, let’s say sizes, colors and other characteristics within the same type of product. Here you can also identify if there is a difference in cost, so that when the customer chooses a product within these variations, it automatically presents not only the characteristics they are looking for, but also the correct price.
